Dartmouth to see King Tut at the de Young Museum 12/13/09 : On December 13, 2009 Dartmouth Alumni Continuing Education, Dartmouth Club of Greater San Francisco, and Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley sponsored a lecture by Susan Ackerman, Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion and chair of the Religion Department at Dartmouth College. Professor Ackerman provided an introduction to the time of Tutankhamun in ancient Egypt. A reception followed, then Dartmouth College alumni, families, and friends viewed Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA. (Picture taking was not permitted in the exhibit area.) Legends of Baseball Vintage Showdown : Legends of Baseball Vintage Showdown with Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, CA 10/17/2009. On a Saturday afternoon, the inaugural game of Legends of Baseball Vintage Showdown was held in San Jose, CA. The Legends played the Stogies of the Vintage Base Ball Federation. The playing was with rules and equipment in use in 1886, which included seven balls to get a base on balls, fielding a foul ball on one bounce is an out, and no penalty for a pitcher hitting a batter with the ball. The players used period-appropriate gear including rather small fielder's mitts for those not bare-handing it. At the end of the day, the Legends prevailed over the Stogies 16 to 15. The Major League Baseball (MLB) Alumni Association raised money for several charities and non-profits including the DAASV Book Award Program by playing an 1800's style baseball game. Spitballs, trick pitches, knickers, hidden ball plays, (really) stolen bases, and 100-year-old rules. What better way to experience history, and America's favorite sport, up close? Legends such as Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry, Ken Griffey, Sr., Bert Campaneris, Darrell Evans, Vida Blue, Lee Smith, Blue Moon Odom, and Rickey Henderson interacted with fans, playing the game as it was invented, and talking with kids. No autograph requests were refused, and access to the players was unprecedented for those accustomed to Major League Baseball today. After the game, the Hall of Famers said they liked playing under the 1886 rules, "It's a more gentlemanly sport." Members of our Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley family had the opportunity to attend a VIP dinner with the players and have their kids get on the field with the Hall of Famers. The event chairman for DAASV was Dr. John Eliot '93 George and Janet Hamma joined the event to take pictures for sharing with DAASV members.

DAASV/DCGSF OCSC Member-Appreciation Event 091004 : The 2009 Dartmouth Alumni Membership Appreciation Event for the SF Bay Area was held at the Berkeley Marina at Olympic Circle Sailing Club. Alumni, parents, and families were welcome to share the day by the Bay. There were many activities prepared, among them kite making and decorating (the wind is steady and very reliable), hearing Anthony Sandberg of OCSC speak to us of Secrets of San Francisco Bay, and taking advantage of the opportunity to go sailing on the Bay with OCSC boats and crews. Lunch by James and Scott was wonderful, as usual, prepared on the OCSC BBQs. Participants are welcome to download and use photos from this collection. Dartmouth Class of '13 Sendoff 090824 : On 8/23/09 the local Dartmouth College admissions representatives and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley met to send off the local members of the Class of 2013. We met at Linda's house in Los Gatos, where Linda and Jeff hosted a get-together with current students, recent graduates, parents of current and recent students, '13s, and their parents. Current students shared their experiences and insights and new students asked questions. Parents also got information about getting their students ready for college. DAASV Tidal Marsh Hike & Bird-Watching Tour 8/4/09 : Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley arranged for a nature talk followed by bird watching hike at Baylands in Palo Alto, CA 8/4/09. We met inside the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center, where a ranger presented information about the salt marshes and the history of the Baylands Park area. Following the presentation and guided bird watching hike, a small celebration of JanetK's birthday was held in the parking lot. These photos are available for download by participants. Dartmouth Big Green Bus visit to DAASV 7/18/09 : The Dartmouth College Big Green Bus came to visit Palo Alto, CA and share their message of sustainability and ecology with the community. The BGB and crew are on a cross-country tour to make an impact in energy use decisions. Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley (DAASV) hosted the bus crew at a reception at Stanford Park Hotel, which also provided lodging for a couple of nights. Dartmouth Airship Ventures Alumni Seminar 2009 090620 : Dartmouth SV Alumni Seminar: Adventures in Air and Space Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley (DAASV) presented their Dartmouth Alumni Seminar 2009 at Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA on 6/20/2009. They were joined by members of Dartmouth Club of Greater San Francisco and the California Bay Area Chapter of the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network to meet at Airship Ventures in Nasa Research Park. We viewed the Zeppelin airship taking off and landing and attended lectures about lighter-than-air travel and space travel. We also had a very pleasant picnic lunch outside where we could watch the airship Eureka passing by, giving passenger rides around the San Francisco Bay Area. Twelve seats on the airship were made available for DAASV to give out as part of the charity fund raising activity. DAASV - Leonardo at The Tech Museum 12/14/2008 : On 12/14/2008, the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley sponsored the 2008 DAASV Holiday Party and Alumi Seminar, "Design Thinking and the Liberal Arts" by Professor Peter Robbie of the Thayer School of Engineering, held at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA. Following the presentation, attendees toured the exhibit, "Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years into the Future", showing drawings from the original journals and working models constructed from those drawings. HHS Pool Replacement 2003-2008 : Homestead High School in 2002 had two pools, one for swimming in lanes and a deeper one for diving and water polo. When serious problems were identified with the operation of the pool, the decision was made by the Fremont Union High School District Board of Trustees to replace the pool as part of bond-funded renovation.
